Grade 3 English Unit: My Family and I

Unit Overview:

This unit is designed for Grade 3 students to learn vocabulary related to family members and describe their family members using simple sentences. The main objectives of this unit are to develop listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in English, as well as to foster awareness and appreciation of different family structures and cultures.

Time Frame: Approximately 4-6 weeks

Lesson 1: Introduction to Family Members

Objective: To introduce and identify family members

- Begin the lesson by presenting flashcards or images of different family members (e.g., father, mother, brother, sister, grandparents).

- Teach the vocabulary by saying and showing the words while students repeat after you.

- Play a game of "Who is missing?" where you display the flashcards and remove one while students close their eyes. They have to guess which family member is missing.

- Conduct a class discussion about family, asking students to share information about their own families.

Lesson 2: Describing Family Members

Objective: To describe family members using adjectives

- Review the vocabulary from Lesson 1.

- Introduce adjectives that can be used to describe family members (e.g., tall, short, young, old).

- Provide examples of sentences using the adjectives, such as "My mother is tall" or "My brother is young."

- Have students work in pairs or small groups to describe their own family members using the adjectives learned.

- Conduct a class activity where students take turns describing a family member and other students have to guess who it is.

Lesson 3: Family Tree

Objective: To create a visual representation of one's family tree

- Teach the vocabulary of family members in an extended family (e.g., aunt, uncle, cousin).

- Introduce the concept of a family tree and show examples.

- Have students create their own family tree, either on paper or using digital tools.

- Provide sentence frames for students to write a short description of each family member in their family tree (e.g., "This is my aunt. Her name is... She is...").

- Allow students to present their family trees to the class and share interesting facts about their family members.

Lesson 4: Family Traditions and Celebrations

Objective: To learn about different family traditions and celebrations

- Present different family traditions and celebrations from different cultures, such as Thanksgiving, Lunar New Year, or Diwali.

- Show pictures or videos related to these traditions and discuss their significance.

- Have students share their own family traditions or celebrations.

- Engage students in a class discussion about similarities and differences among the traditions and celebrations.

Lesson 5: Family Photo Album

Objective: To create a family photo album and describe memories or experiences

- Ask students to bring in photos of their family members or memorable moments.

- Provide each student with a small photo album or ask them to create digital albums.

- Have students write short captions or descriptions for each photo, using vocabulary and sentence structures learned.

- Give students the opportunity to share their photo albums and describe the memories or experiences captured in the photos.

Assessment:

- Throughout the unit, assess students' understanding through class discussions, group activities, and individual assessments.

- Evaluate students' ability to use vocabulary and sentence structures correctly in writing and speaking tasks.

- Provide feedback and guidance to support students' progress.

Extension Activities:

- Encourage students to interview family members or older relatives about their family history and traditions, and share their findings with the class.

- Invite family members to the classroom to talk about their family traditions and engage in cultural activities with the students.

- Organize a family-themed event or exhibition where students can showcase their family trees, photo albums, and share their learning with parents and other students.

By incorporating various activities and assessments, this unit aims to create an engaging and interactive learning environment for Grade 3 students to explore the concept of family and develop their English language skills.
